Jurong Swimming Pool & West Gate Wonderland - Elaine Tan

                                                    Jurong Swimming Pool

Upon arriving to Jurong Swimming Pool, I feel that the space is relatively spacious with different play elements located in different pools. Although it's an old swimming pool, it has attracted several people to the main highlight of the place - thrilling spiral water slides, lazy and wave pool. I love how the whole place has a specific theme as rocks elements are widely used throughout the swimming pool to blend all the elements together with the environment. In addition, there is food outlets surrounding the inside of the swimming pool to cater to the hungry users. The kfc outlet at the "exit area" of the swimming pool allows both outsiders and swimming pool users to gain access to it through incorporating two doors in the outlet- one mainly outside the tap out area of the swimming pool and inside the swimming pool area. The food outlet also provide two separate routes to divide the diners - one mainly for outsiders and the other for people using the pool and the outlet is still fully air conditioned! (just like my proposed cafes which shows it's feasible haha) Through the visit, I feel that I should incorporate play elements that flows with each other instead of putting them as a separate element.

rocks element used act as a "cover up" to blend in

thrilling slides situated at one part of the swimming pool (main attraction)
rock elements situated a the back of the big pool with plants screening at the back to provide privacy

choice of materials used- "covering up the dustbin"

kfc outlet inside the swimming pool area

Westgate Wonderland
Situated at the highest level of Westgate,  I felt that this place is super inviting through the use of unique entrances that draws people into the space itself using the theme of "garden" throughout the whole of its design. Upon going into the space, it's fully utilised with play elements and I really like how all the elements is being designed with the garden theme and the element's scale is proportional to the human's height. All the elements is also very interactive to the users!!
entrance giving a "jungle feel"
shelters that was inspired by flowers with play elements on it (super innovative)
over view of one part of the space (use of insects such as lady bird to give the garden feel so interesting)
wall is also decorated with garden stickers and benches was inspired by the bark of trees!!!

small section of rock-climbing experience accompanied with tree branches at the wall

I really like how the idea of play is transformed into a tree house whereby all the play elements is within the house itself!

Wide use of ropes to test users their stability and gave a high element feel

There was no stairs throughout this treehouse I like the idea of giving the users to "crawl, walk or climb" the ropes instead of climbing a normal boring staircase (I want to incorporate this idea into my design)

Slides from the hole of the tree bark to the ground
Super like how this structure is inspired by flower pots with a little crack hole to incorporate all the play elements into the pot itself

And with flowers coming out from the cracket flower pot haha

I feel that I should incorporate different height elements to allow people to get into the top of a structure

The whole place is "separated" into dry and wet play areas

Tree barks sections being incorporated into the design
Big large watering can to "water" users instead of plants (really like the concept)

I like how there are a blower room whereby users can just go into it and get dry up and feeling dry after that! I feel that users should use this machine before going into my proposed café

  1. Great! Love to read your reflection. Now see how you can incorporate what you have learnt into your design.
Usually I will ask students not to be too tacky or looking like an amusement park, but I guess this is one project where you can probably turn it a bit Disneyland looking and get away with it (because it is fun!).

  2. Yes the overall site should work together as one and not just seperate entities placed together.
